In a heart-wrenching moment that captured the depth of the nation’s grief, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), was visibly overcome with emotion today as he paid tribute to the eight distinguished Ghanaians who perished in the catastrophic military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6.

The solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Ceremonial Gardens of the Flagstaff House, where tears flowed and silence reigned in honour of the fallen statesmen and military officers whose sudden deaths have rocked the country to its core.

Among the victims were:

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence

Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology

Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC

Samuel Aboagye, Deputy NADMO Director-General

And three Ghana Air Force personnel: Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Tsum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo

Hon. Nartey George, flanked by his Deputy Minister Hon. Mohammed Adam Sukparu, as well as directors and senior officials of his ministry, stood in silent tribute before laying a wreath in memory of his fallen colleagues and compatriots. His public display of grief was a poignant reflection of the deep personal and professional ties he shared with several of the deceased.

Following the ceremony, the Minister and his delegation paid a visit to the residence of the late Defence Minister, Dr. Omane Boamah, where they offered heartfelt condolences and words of comfort to the grieving family.

The helicopter crash, which occurred near Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region, has plunged the entire nation into mourning. In response, President John Dramani Mahama has declared a national period of reflection, vowing a full and transparent investigation to uncover the cause of the devastating accident.

As flags fly at half-mast and prayers echo across the country, Ghana unites in sorrow—mourning not just the loss of key national figures, but the heavy cost of service to nation and duty.
