The Government of Ghana has issued a strong protest to the State of Israel following what it describes as the “inhumane and traumatic” treatment of Ghanaian travellers at the Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv.

In a press statement released on Wednesday, the government expressed deep concern over a series of incidents beginning on Sunday, 7 December 2025, in which Ghanaian nationals were allegedly targeted and subjected to unjustified detentions and deportations upon arrival in Israel.

According to the statement, seven Ghanaian travellers were detained without cause, including four Members of Parliament who were in Israel to participate in the Annual International Cybersecurity Conference. Their release, the government said, came only after more than five hours of “strenuous diplomatic intervention.”

The remaining three detained passengers were deported on the next available flight and have since returned to Ghana.

Calling the actions “provocative, unacceptable and inconsistent” with the historically friendly relations between the two countries, the government emphasised that Ghana and Israel have enjoyed over six decades of cooperation marked by significant and unobstructed travel between their citizens.

The statement also rejected Israel’s reported justification that Ghana’s Embassy in Tel Aviv had failed to cooperate regarding deportation procedures. Ghana described this claim as “totally untenable,” insisting that its mission has acted responsibly and in accordance with international law.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has scheduled a meeting with officials of the Israeli Embassy in Accra to formally register Ghana’s displeasure. Meanwhile, the government says it is considering “appropriate reciprocal action” in response to the incident.
