A fierce political debate within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has resurfaced after Bantama MP, Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, issued a sharp rebuttal defending the Ghana Card and highlighting former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s central role in championing the initiative.

The MP’s statement follows exchanges on a WhatsApp platform, where a supporter of an opposing aspirant allegedly dismissed the Ghana Card as insignificant.

Asenso-Boakye described the comment as not only uninformed but part of a broader attempt by some political actors to undermine one of Bawumia’s flagship achievements ahead of upcoming primaries.
According to the MP, the Ghana Card was a symbol of digital governance under the Bawumia-led economic management team, and attacking it is effectively an attack on the NPP’s modernization agenda.

Reaffirming Bawumia’s Contribution
Asenso-Boakye’s rebuttal appears to be a direct defence of Dr. Bawumia’s political brand and his ambition of becoming the 2028 flagbearer for NPP.
He emphasized that the Ghana Card is one of the clearest demonstrations of Bawumia’s vision, which made life easier for citizens.
Political analysts say the MP’s response reflects growing tensions as factions within the party debate performance records and contributions of key NPP figures.
Countering Attempts to Downplay Government Achievements
The Bantama MP accused critics of deliberately “rubbishing” achievements that have been widely recognized internationally as significant steps toward building a modern state.
He highlighted how the Ghana Card has:
- Cleaned up government payrolls by eliminating ghost names,
- Expanded financial inclusion,
- Improved service delivery, and
- Strengthened national security.
Asenso-Boakye argued that these gains form part of the NPP’s broader governance narrative and should not be trivialized for political expediency.
