The Atwima Mponua District is facing a worrying HIV crisis, with 96 new infections recorded this year and 165 patients defaulting on treatment, officials revealed during the district’s 41st Farmers’ Day celebration.

Currently, 337 residents are on treatment, highlighting the urgent need for collective action to curb the spread of the virus.

The District Chief Executive, Hon. Ibrahim Issahak, who also serves as Chairman of the District Committee of the Ghana AIDS Commission, made the above disclosure at a time the District was celebrating its version of the National Farmers’ day on Friday at Baniekrom.
“These figures are worrying and require collective efforts to promote responsible sexual behaviour,” he warned, stressing that Ghana has an estimated 366,650 people living with HIV, with about 50 new infections occurring daily, mostly among persons aged 15-49.

Hon. Issahak urged the community to see the HIV epidemic as a threat to public health and local development, calling for awareness campaigns and behavioural change initiatives to protect lives.
He also expressed gratitude to the people of Baniekrom, traditional authorities, and corporate partners including Ashanti Gold Corporation Bibiani, Asanko Gold Mines Manso Nkwanta, New Okaff Company, and Ekom Yeye Mining Company for supporting the annual celebration.
In closing, the DCE congratulated award-winning farmers, encouraged others to keep striving for recognition, and wished all residents a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
