The Atwima Mponua District marked the 41st National Farmers’ Day at Baniekrom with celebrations highlighting both the achievements of local farmers and the government’s efforts to modernize agriculture.

Speaking at the occasion, the District Chief Executive Hon. Ibrahim Issahak commended the government’s Feed Ghana Programme, aimed at enhancing agribusiness, ensuring food security, reducing inflation, and creating sustainable jobs. Key projects under the initiative include:

  • Grains Development Project for rice, maize, and soybean
  • Vegetable Development Project for tomatoes, onions, and pepper
  • Livestock Development Project to reduce dependence on imported meat

He also highlighted the “Nkoko Nkitinkinti” Initiative, launched on November 13, 2025, which seeks to strengthen the poultry sector through household and backyard production.

Cocoa Sector Support

Hon. Issahak emphasized the district’s ongoing collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and the Cocoa Health and Extension Division (CHED), noting significant support for cocoa farmers, including:

  • 80,639 bags of granular fertilizer distributed to farmers on 36,510 hectares
  • Rehabilitation of 337 hectares of cocoa farms under the World Bank project
  • Distribution of insecticides, foliar fertilizers, and fungicides to cooperatives
  • Production and free distribution of 750,000 cocoa seedlings to 1,467 farmers

Farmers were encouraged to register with cooperatives to ensure easy access to inputs in the next planting season.

Other Agricultural Inputs and Achievements

The district has received and distributed:

  • 10,000 coconut seedlings from the Ministry of Local Government
  • 400 bags of Urea, 350 bags of NPK, 50 boxes of weedicides, and 40 boxes of Wellington boots from the Regional Coordinating Council
  • Oil palm seedlings, coconut seedlings, plantain suckers, and sulphate of ammonia to 625 farmers under the Ghana Landscape Restoration Project

Celebrating Farmers’ Dedication

Hon. Issahak praised farmers and fisherfolk for their resilience and commitment despite challenges such as land disputes, illegal mining, climate change, and high input costs.

He also congratulated award-winning farmers for their innovation and excellence, noting their role in ensuring food security and sustaining local economies.

“Today, we celebrate the achievements of our farmers, and the steps we are taking together to secure a sustainable and prosperous future for agriculture in our district,” he said.
