

Some members and sympathisers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region are throwing their support behind former MP Mercy Adu Gyamfi, popularly known as “Ama Sey,” as their preferred candidate for the upcoming by-election.

They believe Ama Sey is the most suitable candidate to succeed the late MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, and help the party retain the seat.

The group has therefore appealed to the NPP leadership to be strategic in selecting a candidate for the by-election.
Mr. Kumi, who was serving his first term, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, after a short illness. The seat is yet to be declared vacant as the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, awaits official communication from the family before the Clerk notifies the Electoral Commission.

Speaking to Adom News, Fredrick Kwame Gyekye, Campaign Coordinator for Ama Sey, expressed gratitude to constituents for acknowledging the former MP’s achievements. He described her as the most popular and influential political figure in the area and reaffirmed that she remains the party’s strongest chance of retaining the seat.
Mr. Gyekye highlighted her record in development and entrepreneurship support during her tenure, which he said has earned her lasting admiration from the people.
“Despite other potential contestants, Ama Sey is the clear choice for the NPP to retain the seat,” he said, urging party leadership to listen to the grassroots.
