Kwesi Pratt Jnr., the Editor-in-Chief of the Insight newspaper, has advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to avoid political witch-hunting when they assume power in 2025.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo program, Pratt urged the NDC to focus on tackling the urgent economic challenges facing Ghanaians instead of engaging in retribution against members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) or officials from the Akufo-Addo administration.
Pratt’s comments come amid speculation about the NDC’s potential focus on prosecuting NPP members for alleged corruption once they come to power. Addressing the issue, Pratt questioned the value of pursuing political prosecutions if they do not lead to tangible improvements in the lives of Ghanaians.
He asked, “What will you achieve if you arrest people, send them to jail, and yet the price of kenkey rises from 5 cedis to 10 cedis, or the dollar shoots up from 17 cedis to 25?”
Pratt emphasized that the primary concern of Ghanaians is economic relief, not political retribution. He highlighted the importance of addressing inflation, currency depreciation, and the rising cost of living. “For me, what is essential to Ghanaians and must be of concern to the NDC is ensuring that Ghanaians get relief. If we don’t get relief, whatever you do will mean nothing,” Pratt stated.
With Ghana grappling with an economic crisis marked by high prices and a weakening cedi, Pratt’s advice to the NDC is clear: focus on policies that alleviate the financial burden on citizens. As the 2024 elections approach, the NDC faces growing pressure to present solutions that directly address the economic hardships of the average Ghanaian citizen.
