In the wake of the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of Hon. Murtala, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has shared a deeply emotional tribute recounting his final interaction with the late statesman.
Taking to social media, Dr. Amoakohene revealed that just a day before the fatal incident, Hon. Murtala had called him around 4:00 PM to express admiration for his dedication and energy in public service.

“His first words were that he admired my energy and was proud of me,” Dr. Amoakohene wrote. “I humbly replied, ‘Oh senior, I am only learning at your feet,’ and we both laughed.”

Hon. Murtala had requested transportation from the Kumasi Airport for a morning engagement the following day. But by 9:00 AM, the assigned driver reported no contact from the MP. Concerned, Dr. Amoakohene tried reaching him by phone, assuming he was possibly in transit on Africa World Airlines or Passion Air. Tragically, it was later discovered that Hon. Murtala had altered his travel plans and boarded a helicopter — one that would ultimately crash, taking his life.

“We have lost him in this tragic crash, and seeing him lifeless this afternoon broke my heart painfully,” the Minister lamented. “My heart is heavy, my mind is numb. We have lost a fine leader.”

Dr. Amoakohene ended his heartfelt message with a touching farewell: “Rest well, Hon. Murtala. Your words of encouragement will forever remain with me.”
