Hon. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Presidential Envoy in charge of Inter-faith and Ecumenical Bodies, has echoed former President John Dramani Mahama’s powerful message at the recently held #DemocracyDialogue, emphasizing the urgent need to safeguard and strengthen democratic institutions across Africa.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Hon. Afriyie Ankrah described Mahama’s remarks as a “timely reminder” that democracy is not self-sustaining. “We must work for it,” he wrote, underscoring the importance of collective commitment to democratic values.

According to Afriyie Ankrah, the former President’s call for robust institutions, a stronger fight against corruption, protection of media freedoms, and the prioritization of real development serves as a necessary renewal for African nations. “His call… is the renewal our nations need,” he added, aligning himself with the broader themes of institutional integrity and civic responsibility discussed during the event.
The #DemocracyDialogue brought together leaders, policymakers, and civil society actors to discuss the state of democracy on the continent, with a focus on emerging threats and opportunities for reform.

President Mahama’s speech, widely circulated on social media, has been praised for its clarity and urgency as democratic backsliding, media suppression, and governance challenges continue to affect several African countries.
Afriyie Ankrah’s endorsement of Mahama’s message further reinforces the growing consensus among thought leaders and political actors that Africa’s democratic journey requires not only vigilance but renewed action.
