The Ashanti regional Chairman for United Zongo for Bawumia, Alhaji Abdul Aziz is appealing for an extension of the jail term of Abdel Dzidotor; driver responsible for Ghana’s newly acquired train which was on a test run.

Considering the cost of the machine which was acquired from Poland, he premised his petition on the reason that the damage caused to the train amounts to a huge quantum of financial loss to the state and for that matter a 6-month sentence is too minute.

Furthering his reason, Alhaji Aziz referenced how even persons caught for commiting misdemeanor are sometimes whipped with prison sentence exceeding 2 years, “let alone a person who deliberately parked a kia truck on a railway just to sabotage Ghana’s new train test run, leading to an accident”.

In an exclusive interview with www.leakyghana.com, Alhaji Abdul Aziz appealed to Ghana’s Minister for Justice and Attorney General, Godfred Dame to consider his request by increasing the jail term of the driver to 6 years.

BACKGROUND

Earlier this month, the first batch of trains assembled in Poland arrived at the Tema Port to help make railway transportation better in the country.

The new trains are expected to begin operations by May, which meant a test run was scheduled to ascertain the readiness of the trains to serve the public.

However, earlier on Thursday, April 18, 2024, reports emerged that one of the trains has been involved in an accident during a test run on the Tema-Mpakadan railway route.
