Management of Unijay College of Arts and Design has signed an agreement for the construction of a textile manufacturing training school at Asokwa-Kumasi.
The move is made possible through a collaboration with the Ministry of Education incharge of (TVET), with funding support from German Federal Ministry For Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The college will be named Unijay Center of Excellence For Garment Manufacturing, a Textile Industry school.
The center, after completion, will be handed over to the Non-profitable textile industry institution, Unijay Amaleboba Foundation, to operate it permanently.
The project seeks to establish a TVET center and a student hostel facility in Ashanti region.
Successful graduates will be hired directly by the grantee to work at its new garment factory.
Speaking at the official sod cutting and signing ceremony, the director in charge of TVET at the Ministry of Education, Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah, who spoke on behalf of the Education minister, Hon Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum said, the NPP government upon it’s commitment has been running an ambitious programme to set up vocational schools as a means to address the high demand for skilled workers in the textile industry in the country.
He added that, this skills training center will help address unemployment challenges among Ghanaian youths.
Mr Fred Kyei said the government of Ghana is willing to equip the company with any resources they would need to enable train the apprentice who are under their care for skills training.
Chief executive officer for Unijay Limited, Mrs Janet Abobigu said she considered to establish the college to help train the young generation to meet the current demand in job market as means to reduce unemployment ratio in the country.
She said a total of 1,977 new jobs will be created by the project; 796 at the grantees entity and 1.181 at third-party textile factories in Ghana.
The project, after completion, will admit 1,300 women employees and 2,000 men where the IFE grant will be used for the construction of the training and boarding center and purchase of equipment.
The guest of hnour for the occasion, Her Royal Highnest, Lady Julia, commended the CEO of Unijay limited for the initiative, which she thinks will contribute to the efforts put up by key stakeholders to reduce the unemployment rate in the country.
She emphasized that the center will focus on providing the younger generation with skills based education and make them readily available for the job market, which intend to propel the industrial development of Ghana.
Her Royal Highness Lady Julia applauds the efforts of individuals and institutions who have invested resources, time, and efforts to ensure that the project becomes a reality.
