A majority of Accra residents have voiced strong support for the government’s proposed unified Value Added Tax (VAT) system, unveiled in the 2025 Mid-Year Budget, according to a recent public reaction survey conducted by the Information Services Unit of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

The survey, which interviewed 30 residents across the capital, revealed that 20 respondents endorsed the VAT reform, citing its potential to enhance national revenue for critical infrastructure projects such as road construction and broader development initiatives.

While support for the policy was clear, respondents emphasized the need for strict oversight to prevent misuse of public funds. Four participants opposed the move, expressing skepticism over fiscal management, and six remained neutral.

In addition to tax reform, the survey also gauged perceptions of governance. An overwhelming 24 out of 30 respondents stated that the current government appears more transparent than previous administrations. This sentiment was largely attributed to initiatives such as the public declaration of assets by ministerial nominees during vetting—a practice that has been widely praised as a step toward increased transparency and accountability.

The survey results reflect a cautiously optimistic public attitude toward fiscal reforms, underscoring both a willingness to support new tax measures and a demand for greater integrity in government operations.
