A delegation from the United States Embassy in Accra has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, to explore new avenues for collaboration in Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.

The delegation was led by Chargé D’Affaires Rolf Olson and included Political Associate Michael Kmiecinski and Regional Environmental, Science, Technology, and Health Officer Anthony Eterno.

The meeting provided a platform for both sides to reaffirm their commitment to advancing sustainable fisheries management and responsible aquaculture development.

In his remarks, Mr. Olson highlighted the shared concern over Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, describing it as a global challenge that threatens marine ecosystems, livelihoods, and food security.

He emphasized the U.S. Government’s interest in supporting initiatives that strengthen governance, promote sustainability, and attract private-sector investment throughout the fisheries value chain.

Mr. Olson also pointed to emerging business and investment opportunities in Ghana’s fisheries sector, noting that closer collaboration could bring technical expertise, innovative technologies, and responsible investment to drive sector growth.

Minister Arthur, in response, reiterated the Government’s strategic focus on aquaculture as a driver of economic growth, job creation for youth and women, and national food security.

She highlighted capacity gaps, including the need for enhanced vessel monitoring systems and robust fish health management frameworks, stressing that strategic partnerships with allies like the United States are essential for addressing these challenges.

The Minister further emphasized that collaboration in technology transfer, research, monitoring, and enforcement would strengthen Ghana’s efforts toward sustainable fisheries management and long-term sector transformation.

The courtesy call underscored the shared commitment of Ghana and the United States to protecting marine resources, promoting responsible investment, and fostering a sustainable and prosperous fisheries sector.
