Alfred Thompson, a member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has criticized the government for not being open about Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s health condition.

In an interview on JoyNews on Monday, March 31, 2025. He said Ghanaians need to know what happened to the Vice President on Friday, March 28, and why she had to be rushed for medical treatment.

Thompson expressed disappointment about the little information shared with the public regarding her health.

He said that because Prof. Opoku-Agyemang holds a public office, details about her health should not be kept secret.

According to him, once someone takes a political position, their private life becomes a matter of public concern, especially when it involves their health.

He also questioned why she was taken outside the country for medical treatment. He recalled that when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was in opposition, they strongly opposed government officials seeking medical care abroad.

He reminded Ghanaians that in 2017, when Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, then Vice President, traveled abroad for medical attention, the NDC criticized the decision.

He pointed out that even President John Mahama, when he was in opposition, questioned why officials should go abroad for healthcare.

On Sunday, March 30, the Presidency released a statement confirming that Vice President Opoku-Agyemang had fallen ill on Friday, March 28, 2025. She first received medical attention at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Saturday. However, doctors later advised that she travel abroad for further treatment to ensure her full recovery.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, signed the statement, assuring Ghanaians that the Vice President was receiving the best care possible. However, concerns remain about the lack of detailed information on her condition and the decision to seek medical care outside Ghana.
