Fibroid treatment expert, Dr. Isaac Frimpong has cautioned Ghanaian women against the use of hair relaxer creams.
He told newsmen on Friday, 31st May, 2024 that users of hair relaxers are more likely to develop fibroids than non-users because such hair products aid in the growth of fibroid.
Inferring from the American Journal of Epidemiology study, he indicated that using hair relaxers can cause exposure to various harmful chemicals such as Phthalates which disrupts the human endocrine system leading to homonal imbalance.
Dr. Isaac frimpong of Star Clinic; a renowned fibroid treatment center in Ghana explained that though hair relaxers have the ability to straighten hair by breaking the disulified bonds, chemicals making up the product can be dangerous if they penetrate the skin.
He said the chemicals with time cause uterine leiomyomata, or fibroids, adding that uterine fibroids caused by hair relaxers can also leave patients in need of a hysterectomy.
“This is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus”, he indicated.
He therefore admonished that Africa women should avoid using the product and also visit health facilities for check up to know their status.
