Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin has opined that a nation where the majority of its citizens lack common sense experiences stunted growth and development.
Addressing the gathering at Kyebi during the grand Ohum- Kan durbar, Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin acknowledged the value of higher education but stressed that obtaining PhDs or degrees without applying common sense to solve societal problems will continue to hinder the country’s development.
Okyenhene noted, “Education is very important; many people have succeeded because of education. However, there is a type of education we learn from our traditional homes. Without this type of education alongside university education, one’s education is incomplete.”
“One can attend school to acquire a PhD to become a doctor or engineer but may lack this traditional home education, which we call ‘common sense.’ Common sense teaches you how to keep the environment clean without dumping refuse indiscriminately. It teaches how to protect River Birem without engaging in activities that would harm it.”
“This degree called common sense is something many people lack, and it is not acquired in the classroom. It is something we learn from home to develop and improve the lives of people.”
Furthermore, Okyenhene admonished that the Free SHS Policy is one of the greatest interventions in the world, and any attempt to sabotage the policy is ungodly and unpatriotic.
He said, “We all know how determined our President was to ensure every child could attend school without barriers, hence the introduction of the Free SHS Policy, which is one of the greatest policies in the world.”
“But having made education free for our children, why should a teacher or matron steal the food meant for the children and then lament to the world that the children are not being fed well? Some even steal foodstuffs belonging to physically challenged students. This means you are interested in sabotaging and undermining the policy.”
“This is worrisome because it happened in a school right here in Kyebi, where foodstuffs and provisions belonging to the students were stolen. If you are a teacher or anyone in charge of supplying food for our children and you decide to steal the food, it means you are not only undermining the policy but also retarding the development of the country,” Okyenhene added.
Finally, Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin urged politicians to lead the country within the remit of the constitution when elected into office to ensure national development.
“We must be patriotic to our nation and our roots. Elsewhere, people love their country and live within the means of their constitution. This is what we should inculcate here and charge those we elect to manage the affairs of the country to adhere to.”
“But when we vote to elect you and after electing you, you decide to neglect your people. They give all kinds of promises to make life better for the people when seeking power. However, after we elect them, they begin to turn their backs on us; they won’t even pick your calls because they are now in Accra.”
