NURSES AND MIDWIVES ON STRIKE: MAHAMA’S 120-DAY PRIORITY LIST EXPOSES NDC GOVERNMENT’S MISPLACED VALUES*
Press Release
Tuesday, 10th June 2025
The recent declaration by President John Dramani Mahama that nurses and midwives are not among his government’s priority targets within the first 120 days is not just unfortunate — it is a gross display of misplaced priorities, national insensitivity, and disregard for healthcare workers.
Former Bantama MP Hon. Henry Kwabena Kokofu has rightly raised alarm over this dangerous position taken by the NDC-led government. This deliberate exclusion of essential health professionals from the government’s immediate agenda is now fueling real consequences: the ongoing nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
This strike action is not born out of partisanship. It is a direct response to long-standing neglect, worsened by the Mahama government’s official posture that nurses and midwives do not matter enough to be considered a priority.
How can any serious government ignore the cries of those who care for the sick, the vulnerable, pregnant mothers, and the dying?
How can a ruling party call itself pro-poor, and yet disregard those who work tirelessly to save lives every day?
This is a betrayal of our healthcare system and a serious threat to public safety.
We stand with the nurses and midwives in their demand for fair and decent treatment. Their strike is not just justified — it is a wake-up call to a government that seems more focused on politics than on people.
We call on President Mahama and his administration to immediately:
1. Re-engage the GRNMA leadership with sincerity and urgency
2. Reinstate nurses and midwives as a national priority
3. Commit to fulfilling their long-ignored conditions of service
Ghana cannot afford a government that turns its back on those who hold the nation’s health in their hands. If the NDC cannot prioritize healthcare workers, then the people of Ghana will have no choice but to reconsider the government’s priorities altogether.
Signed,
Hon. KOB
