A Zongo Group within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched a blistering attack on efforts to present Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia again as the party’s presidential candidate, warning that such a move would doom the party to another defeat in the 2028 general elections.

At a charged press conference held Wednesday at the Golden Gate Hotel, Amakom in Kumasi, the group threw its full weight behind Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, describing him as the only viable candidate capable of returning the NPP to power.

Addressing the media, Sheikh Dauda Mohammed, NPP Secretary for the Kintampo North Constituency, speaking on behalf of Team Ken, said the party must confront hard truths after its loss of power in the 2024 general elections.
“The NPP is now in opposition. We cannot afford another wrong decision. Giving Dr. Bawumia a second chance will be politically suicidal,” he declared.

According to the group, the January 31, 2026 presidential primaries are a make-or-break moment that will determine whether the party rebuilds and wins in 2028 or remains trapped in opposition.
The Zongo Group accused party leaders and campaign strategists of misleading delegates during the 2023 presidential primaries, when it was claimed that Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy would attract Zongo, Muslim, and Northern votes to secure victory in 2024.
They said the 2024 election results completely disproved that narrative, pointing out that the NPP lost heavily in most Zongo communities and recorded weak performances in large parts of northern Ghana.
“After sixteen years of selling one candidate to Ghanaians, both in opposition and in government, he was rejected by over 1.7 million votes. What exactly has changed?” Sheikh Dauda Mohammed questioned.
In contrast, the group described Kennedy Ohene Agyapong as a fearless grassroots politician with deep roots in the party and a proven record of loyalty and sacrifice.
They cited his consistent financial support to the NPP, welfare interventions for polling station executives, and nationwide backing for parliamentary candidates, as well as his active role in previous national campaigns.
The group argued that the NPP cannot approach the 2028 elections with the same economic and digitisation messages that voters rejected in 2024, insisting that the only credible campaign message now is jobs, industrialisation, factories, and skills training.
“Kennedy Agyapong has demonstrated in practice that he can create jobs. He is not making promises; he is showing results,” the group said.
They also praised Mr. Agyapong’s outspoken stance against corruption, including within the NPP, describing him as honest, transparent, and incorruptible.
Calling him a unifier and a disciplinarian, the group said his leadership would restore internal discipline, reconnect the party with the grassroots, and mobilise the base for victory in 2028.
The Zongo Group ended with a blunt warning to delegates:
“The NPP is at a crossroads. Choose Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and return to power, or repeat the mistakes of the past and remain in opposition.”
