The National Executive Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has donated GHs 100,000 to support Kumasi traders whose businesses were affected by recent fire outbreak at Adum blue light.
General Secretary of the party Justin Kodua presented the cash to the leadership of the traders on Friday when he and some national executives of the party visited the fire scene to have a first time accessment of the devastation.
Joining him in the visit were; Henry Nana Boakye a k.a Nana B (National Organiser), Bernard Antwi Bosiako a.k.a “Wontumi” (Ashanti Regional Chairman for NPP), Raphael Sarfo Patrick (Ashanti regional Youth Organiser), Aikens Addai-Poku (Chairman for Bosomtwe Constituency),Fiifi Mensah (Bantama constitutency chairman), etc.
After the inspection and donation, Justin Kodua pleaded on the NDC led government to raise a seed money to support affected traders.
He opposed decision by government to reconstruct the area, saying government should give traders the opportunity to raise the structure themselves.
“Government may have good intentions to reconstruct the place for them but we all know government processes.
It may take time.
Maybe one year, two years, three years or even four years.
The market women and men themselves have agreed that they can all come in and help. All they need from government is the opportunity to raise the structure themselves rather than government coming in to lead the process which will create another issue on its own.
This is the plea they have made to government and we the NPP support that call”, he said in an interview with newsmen.
Justin Kodua assured the traders that the NPP will never turn its back on them.
“Even though we are in opposition, we have managed to raise some funds to support them.
We always remember them and they can rely on us. We will always attend to their needs.”
The General Secretary of NPP reiterated that the GHs 100,000 was given to support the traders to rebuild the structures and that the party NEC will meet and raise more funds to support them.
