Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reaffirmed the country’s strong support for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), emphasizing its critical role in Africa’s economic transformation and industrialization.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, the Minister described his recent discussions with H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the AfCFTA, as “refreshing,” lauding Mene as a “dynamic” leader of the historic trade initiative.

“Ghana is proud to host the Secretariat and will continue to guarantee all privileges and courtesies,” Ablakwa stated, underscoring the country’s enduring commitment to the success of the continental agreement.

He further hailed the AfCFTA as a “landmark” initiative, originally envisioned by Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and described it as “the key to Africa’s industrialization and transformation.”

As Ghana intensifies its focus on economic diplomacy, Ablakwa stressed the importance of fully leveraging AfCFTA’s vast potential, which brings together a market of 1.3 billion people and a combined GDP of $3.4 trillion. “It is an absolute imperative,” he added.
The AfCFTA, which officially commenced trading in January 2021, aims to create a single market for goods and services across Africa, reduce trade barriers, and boost intra-African commerce. Ghana has played a central role in its implementation, hosting the AfCFTA Secretariat in Accra.
The Minister’s statement reinforces Ghana’s position as a key advocate for regional integration and its ambition to become a strategic hub for African trade.
