The Ashanti Region’s political undercurrents within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took a bold turn on Tuesday as former party executives publicly rallied behind Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, bestowing on him the Akan honorary title “Obedombie”, to wit helper in times of need.

The high-stakes meeting, held at Danyame in Kumasi, brought together influential former NPP executives who said Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s level of support and loyalty to them is unmatched in the party’s history.

The group described the moment as both a recognition of gratitude and a signal of renewed political alignment.

Popularly known as Napo, the NPP’s 2024 vice-presidential candidate was not only honoured with the title but also named Life Patron of the former executives, a move many see as a strategic consolidation of influence within the party’s traditional stronghold.

Announcing the decision, Hon. Kwabena Nsenkyire, former Ashanti Regional First Vice Chairman of the NPP, said the group is repositioning itself to play a decisive role in the party’s road to the 2028 general elections.

“We have the numbers, the experience, and the structures,” he indicated, calling on the party’s national leadership to urgently integrate former executives into the NPP’s reorganization efforts.

Hon. Nsenkyire disclosed that the group has already begun behind-the-scenes engagement with delegates and supporters of all aspirants who contested the recent presidential primaries, in a calculated attempt to neutralize internal divisions blamed for the party’s loss in the 2024 elections.

Political analysts believe the conferment of the “Obedombie” title in Kumasi is more than symbolic; it reflects a growing effort by the NPP’s Ashanti base to reset its power dynamics, with Dr. Opoku Prempeh emerging as a rallying point in the party’s next political chapter.
