Former Member of Parliament for Tema West, Hon. Irene Naa Torshie Addo, has alleged that her unwavering support and vigorous campaigning for Hon. Kennedy Agyapong has left the New Patriotic Party’s Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Divine Agorhom, “desperate.”
Addressing journalists in Kumasi on Sunday, the outspoken former MP claimed that Chairman Agorhom is uncomfortable with her involvement in Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign, hence his alleged attempts to tarnish her hard-earned reputation.
“Divine Agorhom and his team are desperate because of my campaign for Kennedy. They are not happy and want to do everything to destroy my image,” she stated.
Her comments were in response to a recent press statement issued by the regional chairman, which appeared to endorse allegations that she had suggested Greater Accra refused to vote for the NPP in the 2024 elections because the Ashanti Region was favoured in the selection of the party’s running mate.
In the statement, Chairman Agorhom described the purported comment as “unguided and divisive,” adding that, “Hon. Naa Torshie Addo’s claim is not only misleading but also an attempt to sow seeds of division and disunity within our great party and the nation at large.”
Speaking at the Kumasi press briefing, Hon. Naa Torshie dismissed the chairman’s reaction as hasty and ill-motivated, questioning why he relied on what she described as a “fabricated allegation” to issue a public statement against her.
“The least expected from a regional officer of our party is due diligence,” she said, stressing that the chairman’s reliance on unverified social-media content was “unfortunate and needless.”
According to her, the chairman’s actions were driven by ulterior motives. “As a party chairman, he should have reached out to me to verify whether I ever made such comments before issuing a press statement,” she noted.
Hon. Naa Torshie further suggested that the episode forms part of a broader plot by Chairman Agorhom and his associates to damage her public image simply because she supports Kennedy Agyapong.
