“What’s your advice for a young entrepreneur who’s trying to find their feet in a new business?”
I get asked this question quite often, and sometimes I hesitate to answer because I was actually terrible when I first stepped into business. I wasn’t good because I didn’t understand what it was that I needed to do as a business leader day-to-day.
Now, when I’m asked this question, I answer from the perspective of “If I were to go back now, what would I do first and how would I do it?” It’s important to remember that failure is an essential part of success. The experiences we gain from failure are some of the best lessons we can learn in life. I truly believe that to succeed, you need to fail. The path to success is rarely straightforward, and it’s the bumps and pivots along the way that help you get there.
Also, when you first start as an entrepreneur, you can have impressive business goals. However, getting there requires a lot of hard work, which will come with failure at some point. If you want to survive in those crucial early years of your startup, make sure to improve your skills and ask for help when you need it. Experienced people who know the tricks of the trade are the best resource available. Young entrepreneurs often think that they know best and tend to ignore this gold mine of knowledge. But if you engage these experienced business leaders, they will share their expertise, which would benefit you in the long run.
