MTN Ghana is set to roll out a nationwide re-registration exercise for all mobile money (MoMo) agents beginning next year, as part of efforts to sanitise the mobile money ecosystem and strengthen security within the industry.

The announcement was made by Abdul-Majeed Rufai, Senior Manager for Commercial Mobile Money at MTN Ghana, during this year’s MTN MoMo Dinner and Awards Night organised by the company’s Northern Business District in Kumasi.

According to Mr. Rufai, the decision follows the detection of some mobile money agents operating with details that do not belong to them. He recalled cases where fraudulent agents were arrested only for investigations to reveal that they were transacting under other people’s identities.

“The re-registration exercise is a way of sanitising the system and ensuring that we have genuine agents in the system. It will also help create a safe, secure and transparent ecosystem for both agents and customers,” he explained.

The MTN MoMo Dinner and Awards Night, held at the Golden Bean Hotel in Kumasi, brought together mobile money agents and key stakeholders from the Bono, Ahafo, Bono East and Ashanti regions. The annual event is organised to celebrate and reward outstanding partners, merchants and agents whose contributions have driven the growth of MTN Mobile Money Limited.
Addressing journalists on the sidelines, Nii Adotey Mingle, General Manager of MTN Northern Business District, said the awards ceremony was not only to recognise excellence in performance but also to strengthen collaboration with government and other stakeholders to help grow the mobile money industry to its full potential.
He expressed optimism about Ghana’s fast-evolving financial ecosystem, pointing to innovations such as digital lending, virtual assets and open banking as key drivers of financial inclusion.
On security, Mr. Mingle assured customers and agents that MTN Ghana is working closely with state security agencies to ensure that any mobile money-related security issues are dealt with swiftly. He also cautioned customers to be vigilant against fraudsters and never to disclose their MoMo PINs.
“Nobody should convince you to divulge your PIN. Keep your PIN a secret. It should only be you who should know the number,” he advised.
The event was climaxed with the presentation of cash prizes and high-value items, including motorbikes, to deserving agents in recognition of their dedication and exceptional performance.
