Drivers and staff of MTN Ghana in the Northern Business District have become the first beneficiaries of the company’s 2025 nationwide road safety training program.

The session took place on Monday at the MTN office in Nhyiaeso, Kumasi.

This year’s edition marks a significant shift, as MTN Ghana partnered with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to deliver the training.

The program aims to equip MTN drivers and staff with practical road safety skills while strengthening compliance with national road traffic regulations.

Given MTN’s position as Ghana’s largest telecommunications provider with a vast fleet and staff base, the training is expected to heighten safe driving behavior among MTN drivers across the country.

Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director for Education, Research and Training at MTTD, led the facilitation.

He described the rising incidence of preventable road crashes in Ghana as deeply concerning and called for proactive measures to protect road users.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the event, he revealed that between January and October 2025 alone, Ghana recorded 11,000 road crashes, resulting in over 2,400 deaths and 12,000 injuries. He emphasized that these figures pose a national and global safety threat.

“This partnership with MTN Ghana is timely. Building the capacity of their drivers and staff is essential so that when they are on the road, they will be seen to be safer in the way they handle vehicles,” he stated.

According to him, the rising crash statistics compared to last year highlight an urgent need for stronger road safety interventions.

About the Training

MTN Ghana conducts the capacity-building program twice annually to enhance the driving skills and safety awareness of its staff drivers.

Road safety and defensive driving remain key components of the company’s occupational health and safety policy.

The training focuses on:

  • Defensive driving techniques
  • Hazard recognition and risk assessment
  • Safe driving under varying conditions
  • Vehicle inspection and maintenance
  • Compliance with Ghana’s traffic regulations, including speed limits, seatbelt use, and avoidance of distracted driving

MTN has maintained a strong reputation for its safety programs, with MTN drivers previously winning corporate road safety awards in Ghana; an indication of the company’s sustained commitment to reducing road-related risks.

The company’s road safety policy mandates strict adherence to Ghana’s road traffic laws, with disciplinary action applicable for any breach.

MTN’s Commitment to Road Safety

Road safety training forms part of mandatory induction for new employees and is refreshed annually for all staff. The overarching goal is to ensure the protection of MTN employees, passengers, and all road users.

By collaborating with certified training partners such as the MTTD, MTN continues to implement best practices in corporate driver training, helping reduce accidents and promoting a culture of safety on Ghana’s roads.
