The MTN Ghana Foundation has to sensitized pupils of the New Asafo Basic and Junior High School on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) as part of its ongoing campaign, “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.” The engagement took place on Tuesday, December 8, 2025, at Asokwa in Kumasi.

The annual initiative, which was launched in 2024, is carried out in partnership with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service. This year’s campaign places strong emphasis on combating cyberbullying and digital abuse, especially those targeting women and children.

Through its wide digital reach, MTN Ghana uses expert-led educational sessions, survivor stories, and awareness drives to promote safe online practices, responsible digital behavior, and reporting of abuse. The overarching goal is to build nationwide awareness and strengthen positive digital citizenship among Ghana’s youth.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of the event, George Kyei-Frimpong, Education Portfolio Adviser for the MTN Ghana Foundation, underscored the importance of educating children on GBV at an early age.

> “The earlier, the better,” he stated. “Sensitizing them now means they grow with the knowledge. That is why MTN Ghana has decided to start from the basic school level, and with time we will extend these engagements to secondary schools as well.”

He reaffirmed MTN’s commitment to fighting all forms of gender-based violence, including the rising trend of digital abuse on social media and other online platforms.

At the New Asafo school, the session saw lively participation from pupils, who were taken through various forms of GBV, with a special focus on violence against girls. Students also took part in an engaging debate competition involving three female and three male JHS students, debating the motion: “Teaching boys and girls the same content will prevent violence.”

As part of the outreach, the MTN Ghana Foundation made a generous donation of tablets and other ICT equipment to support the school’s computer laboratory and enhance ICT education for the pupils.

The nationwide campaign is expected to conclude with a closing ceremony in Accra later this month.
