In a bold step toward reducing regional disparities and boosting youth employability, the MTN Ghana Foundation has partnered with the University for Development Studies (UDS) to launch the construction of a cutting-edge Student Resource Centre on the Tamale campus.

This GHS 9.7 million investment signals a strategic move to unlock the potential of young people in northern Ghana by providing them with the digital tools, training, and opportunities needed to thrive in a technology-driven world. The project is expected to be completed in eight months.

At the heart of the initiative is a vision to close the digital divide and create a pipeline of skilled talent equipped for Ghana’s evolving economy.

The Centre will serve not just UDS students but also learners from surrounding communities and institutions, making it a regional hub for digital literacy, innovation, and collaboration.

Key features of the new centre include:

  • A high-tech computer lab with 70 laptops, robotics kits, and virtual conferencing technology
  • Access to the MTN Skills Academy platform for self-paced learning in digital and technical fields
  • Flexible, modern spaces designed to support group work, creativity, and peer-to-peer learning
  • Open enrolment opportunities for non-UDS students across the region

Robert Kuzoe, Senior Manager at the MTN Ghana Foundation, emphasized the broader socio-economic implications of the project.

“With over half of Ghana’s population under 25, empowering our youth, especially in underserved regions is not just a social responsibility, but an economic imperative,” he said. “This centre will be a launchpad for innovation, helping young people build the skills that today’s job market demands.”

He also noted that while digital connectivity in Ghana is improving, challenges like youth unemployment persist. “We see this initiative as part of the solution, not only to train young minds but to inspire confidence, leadership, and self-reliance through technology.”

Professor Muniru Alhassan, Dean of the UDS Nyankpala Campus, praised the initiative as timely and transformational.

“In today’s job market, technical skills alone aren’t enough. Students need exposure to real-world applications, teamwork, and digital fluency. This facility provides all that in one place,” he remarked.

This initiative aligns with the MTN Ghana Foundation’s continued commitment to education and digital inclusion. By investing in long-term solutions that strengthen both individual capabilities and regional development, the Foundation is helping to build a more inclusive and resilient Ghana.
