MTN Ghana has recorded significant success through its Bright Scholarship Awards initiative, further solidifying its commitment to education and national development.

Since the program was relaunched in 2018, following MTN Ghana’s adoption of the scheme, the initiative has supported an additional 720 students across the country with full scholarships.

The impact of the program has been remarkable, with several success stories shared during the 2025 MTN Bright Scholarship Awards ceremony, held on Monday at the Faculty of Law Auditorium, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi.

Key highlights from the initiative include:

  • 10 students emerging as valedictorians and best graduating students from their respective universities,
  • 520 beneficiaries graduating with First Class Honours in various fields,
  • An additional 94 beneficiaries graduating with Second Class Upper Division.

These achievements were disclosed by the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Dr. Isaac Mate, General Manager of Sustainability & Shared Value at MTN Ghana.

Dr. Mate announced MTN Ghana’s intention to scale up the scholarship program in the coming years, citing the program’s growing impact.

He revealed that, over the next three years, 1,500 students and teachers will be covered.

β€œThe expanded scholarship will target students pursuing STEM, vocational, and technical education, as well as teachers seeking to upgrade their skills in these critical areas,” Dr. Mate stated.

2025 Bright Scholarship Awards: A Competitive and Inclusive Initiative

For the 2025–2026 academic year, a total of 3,691 Ghanaians applied for the highly competitive scholarship program. From this pool, 1,200 applicants were shortlisted for interviews, and 500 outstanding students and teachers from 42 public institutions nationwide were awarded scholarships.

The breakdown of this year’s beneficiaries is as follows:

  • 300 students pursuing first degrees in STEM, vocational, and technical fields,
  • 200 teachers currently furthering their education in public universities.

Of the 500 recipients, 187 are female and 313 are male. Importantly, the program continues to embrace inclusivity, with 33 differently abled students among the awardees.

β€œThis shows that the Bright Scholarship is not just about breaking barriers, but amplifying impact across disciplines, regions, and communities,” Dr. Mate emphasized.

He reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s unwavering commitment to education, adding:

β€œWe believe that investing in people is the surest path to bridging the poverty gap.”

Government Endorsement

The event was graced by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who praised MTN Ghana for using the scholarship initiative to address both educational inequalities and foundational socio-economic imbalances in Ghana and across the African continent.

Dr. Amoakohene expressed particular satisfaction that 38 beneficiaries hail from the Ashanti Region and commended the inclusion of differently abled persons in this year’s selection.

β€œMTN is not only providing access to education but is also correcting some of the foundational imbalances in our society,” he remarked.
