MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its strong commitment to digital inclusion and female empowerment by significantly expanding its support for the National Girls-in-ICT Initiative — a flagship program by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations.

The Girls-in-ICT program aims to equip young Ghanaian girls and their teachers with vital digital skills to prepare them for the future of work. To date, the initiative has trained over 13,000 girls aged 9 to 15, and 1,300 teachers across 11 regions in Ghana, including North-East, Western-North, Ahafo, Bono-East, Bono, Savannah, Northern, Eastern, Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Volta.

Participants receive hands-on training in areas such as coding, website development, game design, and animation, equipping them with the tools to thrive in a digital economy.

In 2021, as part of its 25th Anniversary celebrations, MTN Ghana initially committed GHS 10 million to support the Ministry’s implementation of the program over three years. That commitment has since grown to GHS 17.6 million through to 2025 — cementing MTN Ghana’s role as one of the largest private-sector contributors to the country’s digital empowerment drive.

Speaking at the climax of the Volta Region edition of the program, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Wiafe, underscored the transformative impact of the initiative:

“At MTN, we believe in inclusivity — empowering girls, the differently abled, and everyone who deserves a chance. We are not just investing in words but in action. We want to ensure every Ghanaian child, especially girls, can access practical ICT education. The future belongs to those with digital skills. It’s not a luxury anymore — it’s a necessity.”

She added,

“Our CEO, Stephen Blewett, always says the next big thing must come from Africa. We are here to help make that happen by providing the skills, the tools, and the platform.”

The Volta Region edition is the first of three regional events planned for 2025, with upcoming sessions scheduled for the Upper East and Upper West regions. In a bid to ensure the sustainability and national expansion of the program, the Ministry is also working to establish a Trust Fund dedicated to the initiative.

MTN Ghana’s involvement aligns with its overarching vision to lead the delivery of a bold new digital world and its belief that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern, connected life. It also forms a core part of the company’s diversity and inclusion agenda.

As Ghana’s digital landscape evolves, MTN Ghana remains at the forefront — bridging the digital divide and empowering the next generation of female digital leaders.
