The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has underscored the crucial role of schools and universities in the development of sports talent in Ghana, during a courtesy visit by the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mr. Kurt Okraku, at the Ministry of Education today.

The meeting celebrated two recent milestones in Ghanaian sports: the Black Stars’ successful qualification for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, and the University for Development Studies’ (UDS) historic victory at the 2025 FISU World University Championship. Both achievements, the Minister noted, reflect the growing potential of youth in Ghana and the urgent need to invest more deliberately in their development.

In his statement, Hon. Iddrisu emphasized the importance of strengthening sports programs in Senior High Schools, Colleges of Education, and Universities as part of a broader national strategy to identify and nurture young talent.

“I urge the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to take Senior High School, colleges, and universities sports more seriously,” the Minister said. “These institutions are the breeding grounds for young talent, and investing in their development will strengthen the foundation of Ghana’s sports, especially football.”

He advocated for increased support for inter-school competitions, grassroots scouting initiatives, and improved sporting infrastructure across educational institutions.

According to him, these efforts will ensure the sustained growth of sports in the country and solidify Ghana’s position on the global sporting stage.

The GFA President, Mr. Okraku, expressed appreciation for the Ministry’s continued support and pledged the Association’s commitment to closer collaboration with the education sector to enhance youth development through sports.

The Ministry and the GFA are expected to explore joint initiatives in the coming months aimed at aligning educational policy with national sports development priorities.
