Implementers of Mensah Health Rehabilitation Project (MEMHREP) are putting up a 500-bed rehabilitation center at Asante Juaben of the Ashanti region.
The facility after completion will comprise a 500 bedroom cluster which will accommodate up to 500 neglected persons suffering from mental illness.
It is expected to offer treatment to up to 1,500 of them in a year.
Addition to the above are a resettlement area, conference hall, mosque, church auditorium, a day clinic for out patient treatment, outdoor recreational center among others.
At a press briefing held on Sunday, 2nd June, 2024, Project Manager cum CEO for MEMHREP, Mr. Mensah Adu Gyamfi said the project seeks to address homelessness and neglect of persons with mental disorders in Ghana.
He lamented over how they have been left at the mercy of derogatory, inhumane and deplorable conditions, saying “Ghana as a country is not treating them fairly”.
“Some of them fall victim to road crashes, assault”, explaining that the foregoing challenges are attributed to the homelessness of the victims.
“They have been neglected long enough and this cannot continue because they are human like us. It is for this reason this project was initiated”.
The project Manager therefore advocated for an end to the neglect and homelessness of mental patients and also called on Organisations and individuals to contribute financially towards the successful completion of the project.
