On Thursday, June 30th, 2024, the Allotey Auditorium at KNUST College of Science was abuzz with excitement as the Mechanical Engineering Students Association (MESA) hosted a groundbreaking Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship Seminar.
The event, which was the talk of the day, saw a convergence of esteemed guests, industry experts, and students from KNUST and Kumasi Senior High Technical SHS (KSTS).
Hon. Dr. Stephen Amoah, Sticka, the Deputy Minister of Finance, graced the occasion as the Special Guest of Honour. In his keynote address, he emphasized the importance of financial literacy and entrepreneurship in shaping the future of Ghana’s youth. “Financial literacy is a vital skill that empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their financial resources, leading to economic stability and growth,” he stressed.
Mr. Ernest Dankwah, CEO of Ahafo Ano Premier Rural Bank Plc, shared valuable insights on the role of banking in entrepreneurship. “Access to financial services is crucial for entrepreneurs to succeed. As a bank, we are committed to supporting innovative ideas and startups,” he said.
Mr. Paa Yaw Arkoh-Koomson, Access Bank Cluster Head Ashanti Region, emphasized the importance of financial planning and management. “Effective financial management is critical to achieving your goals. Make informed decisions about your finances, and you will reap the rewards,” he advised.
Mr. David Adjei, KMA Director of Finance, shared his expertise on personal finance and budgeting. “Create a budget, prioritize your expenses, and save for the future. These habits will serve you well in your personal and professional lives,” he said.
Mr. Eric Oti Nyarko, Deputy Ashanti Regional Manager of Ghana Enterprises Agency, discussed the role of government agencies in supporting entrepreneurship. “We are committed to providing resources and support to entrepreneurs, enabling them to grow and succeed,” he assured.
Mr. Elijah Azendongo, Zonal Branch Manager for the Student Loan Trust Fund at KNUST, shared insights on accessing financial support for education. “The Student Loan Trust Fund is committed to providing financial assistance to students. Take advantage of this opportunity to funding your education,” he encouraged.
The event also featured side attractions, including E-zwich card registration, passport and birth certificate registration, and student loan application assistance. The executives of MESA, led by President Acheampong Takyi Desmond, ensured a seamless and engaging program.
In their remarks, the executives emphasized the importance of financial literacy and entrepreneurship in shaping the future of engineers. “As engineers, we must develop problem-solving skills and embrace entrepreneurship to create innovative solutions and jobs,” said President Acheampong.
Vice President Sandra Sackey encouraged the students to take advantage of the resources available to them. “Utilize the knowledge and networks gained today to achieve your goals and make a positive impact in your communities,” she urged.

Women’s Commissioner Gyening Francisca emphasized the importance of empowering women in engineering. “As women in engineering, we must support and empower each other to achieve our goals and make a positive impact in our communities,” she encouraged.
Presidential Advisor and Speaker of MESA Parliament Kuwordor Michael encouraged the students to take leadership roles and make a positive impact. “As engineers, you have the capacity to lead and make a positive impact in your communities. Take leadership roles and create positive change,” he urged.
Deputy Academic Board Head Ayarkwah Douglas emphasized the importance of academic excellence. “Academic excellence is crucial to achieving your goals. Stay focused, work hard, and achieve your dreams,” he advised.
The seminar concluded with a networking session, where students and industry experts interacted, sharing ideas and experiences. The event was a resounding success, inspiring the students to embrace financial literacy and entrepreneurship as they pursue their engineering careers.
As the students departed the auditorium, they carried with them a renewed sense of purpose and determination to shape their future and make a positive impact in their communities.
