The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, is demonstrating unwavering dedication to transforming Kumasi into one of Africa’s most enviable cities.

Under his leadership, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is actively rolling out a variety of projects and initiatives aimed at building a resilient, modern metropolis. Building on the 15 projects (two of which are ongoing) completed in 2024, the Assembly has outlined new development plans for 2025.

Key among these is the construction of two 6-unit classroom blocks—one at Santasi M/A School and the other at Adabya Islamic School in Krofrom. Additionally, the Assembly will construct a new office building for the Manhyia North Sub-Metro and complete the office complex for the Bantama Sub-Metro before year’s end.

In the health sector, plans are underway to expand the KMA Clinic by adding a Pediatric Center as well as separate male and female wards.

Further development efforts include the construction of a footbridge and the installation of mechanized boreholes across the metropolis to improve access and infrastructure.

Speaking during the 1st Ordinary Meeting of the 2nd Session of the 9th Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, held at the Prempeh Assembly Hall on Thursday, Mayor Boadi emphasized his administration’s focus on enhancing public engagement and increasing the Assembly’s visibility both in traditional and digital media spaces.

“We have become more visible, more responsive, and more proactive in our communication—but there is still more to be done,” he noted.
“My goal is clear: to build a responsive, tech-driven, and citizen-centered public relations system that fosters trust, promotes transparency, and highlights the transformation taking place in Kumasi.”

To achieve this vision, the Mayor outlined three strategic pillars:

1. Rebranding the Assembly’s Image: Shifting public perception from viewing the KMA as a bureaucratic body to recognizing it as a service-oriented and innovative local government.

2. Telling Kumasi’s Story: Openly sharing the city’s progress, challenges, and opportunities with both national and international audiences.

3. Empowering the PR Unit: Enhancing its role from simple information dissemination to being a key driver of stakeholder engagement and strategic communication.

As part of this agenda, the KMA is introducing several forward-thinking initiatives:

Digital Communications Hub: Designed to boost storytelling across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok using engaging visuals and local languages. Plans are also in place to launch a mobile app or WhatsApp bot to facilitate real-time citizen feedback and service access.

Quarterly “State of Kumasi” Briefings: These updates will be rotated among sub-metros to encourage local participation and ensure transparency.

Corporate Branding Campaign: This includes improved citywide and sub-metro signage, as well as a revived KMA Magazine or e-newsletter to showcase ongoing projects, strategic partnerships, and success stories.

Departments and sub-metros have been urged to regularly share updates and milestones with the PR Unit to ensure consistent and effective public communication.

Despite the progress made, the Mayor acknowledged that the PR Unit still faces challenges such as limited digital infrastructure, a reactive communication model, and inconsistent engagement with key stakeholders including communities, media, civil society, and businesses.

“Addressing these gaps is critical to building a truly proactive and citizen-focused public relations system,” he concluded.
