Julius Debrah is a prominent Ghanaian politician and public administrator who has played a central role in the governance of the Fourth Republic.

Widely regarded as a trusted ally of President John Dramani Mahama, Debrah currently serves as the Chief of Staff of the Republic of Ghana, a position he has held before and returned to following Mahama’s comeback to office.

Born on 24 April 1966 in Suhum in the Eastern Region of Ghana, Julius Debrah hails from Obomeng Kwahu.

He received his secondary education at Mpraeso Secondary School and Achimota School, before proceeding to the University of Ghana, Legon, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Archaeology and Sociology.

His academic background laid the foundation for a career focused on social development, governance, and public administration.

Before entering high-level public service, Debrah built a career in the private sector, engaging in entrepreneurship across areas such as tourism, real estate, insurance, and media.

Debrah’s rise in public service began with his appointment as Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority in 2009.

Under President John Mahama, Julius Debrah served as Eastern Regional Minister and later Greater Accra Regional Minister, where he oversaw regional administration, security coordination, and development planning.

He was subsequently appointed Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, a portfolio through which he championed grassroots governance, decentralization, sanitation reforms, and urban planning initiatives such as the national street-naming exercise.

In February 2015, Debrah was appointed Chief of Staff, making him the principal coordinator of government business at the Presidency. In this capacity, he supervised presidential staff, coordinated inter-ministerial activities, and ensured the effective implementation of government policies.

His leadership style emphasized discipline, institutional coordination, and accountability within the executive branch.

Following the return of President Mahama to power after the 2024 general elections, Julius Debrah was once again appointed Chief of Staff in January 2025, reaffirming his status as one of the president’s most dependable and experienced aides.
