The Minister for Communication, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has issued a strong warning to MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, indicating that the government will proceed with a planned shutdown of the service if the company fails to return to the negotiation table over pricing concerns.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, the Minister expressed deep frustration over what he described as DStv’s “disrespect to Ghanaians,” stating unequivocally that he would no longer tolerate the company’s current stance.

“Let me be clear, I have no intention to continue tolerating the disrespect to Ghanaians by DStv,” the post read.

The Minister revealed that DStv had previously expressed willingness to engage the Ministry of Communication on concerns surrounding their pricing model and had requested a pause on enforcement action. However, according to the Minister, the company has now backed away from those discussions.

“If MultiChoice is not interested as they claim in their last statement, in discussing a reduction in prices as they had indicated to me, we would proceed to effect the shutdown tomorrow as indicated,” he warned.
The Minister emphasized that the law applies equally to all businesses operating in Ghana, stating, “No company is above the law.” He added that until DStv is ready to engage in meaningful dialogue on pricing reforms, “there is nothing for us to meet over.”
He confirmed that the National Communications Authority (NCA) has been directed to carry out the regulatory enforcement action, adding that Ghana remains “open for businesses that respect our laws and institutions.”
This latest development escalates an ongoing standoff between the government and MultiChoice over the affordability of subscription services offered by the satellite TV provider. Consumer advocacy groups have also raised concerns about DStv’s pricing, calling for regulatory intervention to ensure fair access.
As of now, MultiChoice Ghana has not released a formal response to the Minister’s latest statement. The nation awaits tomorrow’s deadline to see if the enforcement will be carried out or if further negotiations will resume.
