Ghana has initiated negotiations to take possession of the residence in Guinea where Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah lived and worked during his final years as Co-President of Guinea, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Hon. Ablakwa said the move is being undertaken on the instructions of President John Dramani Mahama, as part of efforts to honour and preserve the legacy of Ghana’s first President and one of Africa’s foremost Pan-African leaders.

The Mahama Administration, he explained, plans to renovate and preserve the historic property not only as an act of respect but also to develop it into a heritage site that will offer tourists a comprehensive experience of Nkrumah’s life, tracing his journey from Ghana to Guinea following his overthrow in 1966.
The landmark decision was conveyed to the family of Guinea’s first President, Ahmed Sékou Touré, during a visit led by Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, after the investiture of Guinea’s President, H.E. Mamady Doumbouya. The delegation also toured Nkrumah’s abandoned residence in Conakry.

Hon. Ablakwa noted that Ghana’s delegation was warmly received by three generations of the Sékou Touré family, led by the late leader’s eldest son.
He added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently negotiating the terms and conditions for the acquisition and is engaging preservation experts for the project.
He assured that the Ghanaian public would be fully informed at every stage in keeping with the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
“Nkrumah never dies,” the Foreign Affairs Minister stated, underscoring the enduring relevance of Dr. Nkrumah’s ideals and legacy.
