In a moving act of compassion and reflection, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, marked his birthday not with celebration, but with solemn charity and national mourning.

Taking to his official Facebook page, the minister expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of birthday wishes he received on August 11. However, he acknowledged that “heavy hearts and a state of profound sorrow” rendered joyous celebration impossible.

In honour of his late friend and political ally, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah — a former Minister of Defense and medical doctor who once served at the 37 Military Hospital — Hon. Ablakwa chose to quietly observe the day by paying the medical bills of a number of children currently admitted at the hospital. Among the beneficiaries was an infant battling life-threatening burns who required urgent surgery.

“We pray for the healing of all sick children,” he wrote, underscoring the emotional weight of the day.

Hon. Ablakwa also paid tribute to the “8 martyrs of August 6,” calling for divine comfort for their grieving families and eternal rest for the departed souls.

The post has drawn widespread admiration online, with many praising the minister’s selflessness and dedication to public service, even in times of personal and national grief.
