Ghana’s Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has announced an ambitious plan to overhaul the country’s technical education system, inspired by Japan’s globally acclaimed KOSEN model. The announcement was made as he concluded his official working visit to Japan with strategic visits to the National Institute of Technology (NIT) and the National Institute of Special Needs Education (NISE).

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, the Minister revealed that under the leadership of H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, Ghana intends to establish its own National Institutes of Technology as part of the President’s Resetting Agenda. The initiative will begin with the transformation of the Accra Technical Training Centre (ATTC) and the Dabokpa Technical Institute into fully-fledged national institutes, delivering modern, industry-driven technical education.

“The KOSEN model’s emphasis on practical, hands-on training aligns perfectly with our vision for 21st-century education in Ghana,” said Hon. Iddrisu. “We are committed to building institutions that equip young Ghanaians with the real-world skills they need to thrive in a competitive global economy.”

The Minister also underscored Ghana’s renewed commitment to inclusive education following his visit to NISE, where he explored Japan’s use of digital tools in supporting students with special needs.
“These insights reaffirm our national resolve to make inclusive education a cornerstone of our educational reforms,” he stated. “We are determined to build a future where every young person—regardless of ability—is equipped with the skills and opportunities to succeed.”

Hon. Iddrisu’s visit signals a strategic pivot in Ghana’s education policy, positioning the country to tap into global best practices while tailoring solutions to local needs.
