Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has paid glowing tribute to the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, following a farewell visit marked by reflections on significant milestones in Ghana–China relations.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, the Minister described Ambassador Tong Defa’s tenure as impactful, noting that the diplomat played a key role in deepening bilateral cooperation between Accra and Beijing within a relatively short period.

According to Hon. Ablakwa, Ghana secured a total of $60 million in grant support from China during Ambassador Tong Defa’s service. i
This includes $30 million for the construction of a modern Aflao Market and another $30 million grant to establish a Science and Technology University in Damongo, both projects expected to boost local economic development and access to education.

The Foreign Affairs Minister also revealed that Ghana has expedited efforts to join the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed), a process that has already received Cabinet approval and is expected to be ratified by Parliament soon.
On the trade front, Hon. Ablakwa announced the successful conclusion of bilateral negotiations leading to a zero percent tariff regime with China, a move anticipated to enhance Ghanaian exports and strengthen trade ties.
He further noted a significant increase in scholarships for Ghanaians, alongside enhanced trade relations and deeper multi-sectoral cooperation between the two countries.
The Minister highlighted collaborative efforts between Ghana and China in tackling illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey.”
These efforts include cooperation on new visa controls and public education initiatives in China aimed at discouraging involvement in illegal mining activities in Ghana.
Additionally, Hon. Ablakwa cited progress on Constituency Smart School Projects, underscoring China’s support for Ghana’s education and digital transformation agenda.
Concluding his remarks, the Minister expressed profound appreciation to Ambassador Tong Defa, describing him as a “true friend of Ghana,” and wished him well in his future endeavours.
The farewell engagement underscores the continued strength of Ghana–China relations and signals the government’s commitment to building on the foundations laid during Ambassador Tong Defa’s tenure.
