Statement on the Ongoing Support for Suzzy (Penamang)
Last week, I had the opportunity to visit young Penamang, affectionately known as Suzzy, following the unfortunate shooting incident at her school by a classmate, which tragically affected her eyes and led to her admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Upon learning of her condition, I immediately intervened and secured a commitment from the hospital’s CEO, Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, to take personal charge of her treatment. Additionally, I offered financial support to the family, and through an arrangement between myself and the hospital, all medical bills have since been taken care of—ensuring that the family bears no cost for her care at the hospital.
Following an extensive medical assessment, doctors have confirmed that Suzzy has suffered severe damage to her eyes. The family has expressed a desire to seek advanced treatment for her abroad. In support of this, I have been actively working with them to obtain the necessary travel documents, including her passport and visa. I have also engaged with the Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who has been incredibly responsive and has demonstrated a strong willingness to assist. He has requested certain supporting documents from the hospital, which I am currently working to provide.
Regrettably, a video has surfaced on social media featuring a woman making claims that no assistance has been rendered to Suzzy and her family by me. I have since spoken with Suzzy’s brother, Clement, who has been my primary point of contact throughout this process. He informed me that the woman in question is not known to the family and expressed his concern over the misleading nature of her statements.
As someone who has long advocated for the rights and welfare of children, I understand the importance of acting with care and discretion when a child’s well-being is at stake. Public commentary and social media banter must not come at the expense of a vulnerable child’s care and recovery. I appeal to everyone, including those engaging online, to prioritize Suzzy’s best interests and exercise restraint in their public remarks. I assure you that much is being done behind the scenes to assist with her care and recovery.
Our collective focus must remain on securing the best possible outcome for Suzzy, and I remain fully committed to supporting her and her family every step of the way.
Thank you.
