In a significant diplomatic moment, Ghana has officially welcomed His Excellency Zia Choudhurry as the new United Nations Resident Coordinator. The announcement was made by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a statement shared on his official Facebook page.
Minister Ablakwa expressed Ghana’s pleasure and honour in receiving the open letters of the new UN envoy, describing the moment as a renewed chapter in the nation’s long-standing relationship with the United Nations.
“As the UN turns 80, Ghana reaffirms its steadfast belief in the UN Charter; renews our unwavering commitment to multilateralism,” Ablakwa stated. He also reiterated Ghana’s status as one of the top five contributors of troops to UN peacekeeping missions globally—a role the country remains proud to uphold.
The Foreign Minister emphasized that Ghana will continue to advocate strongly for UN reforms aligned with the African Union’s Ezulwini Consensus, which calls for greater African representation and voice within the Security Council.
Looking ahead, Ablakwa noted that Ghana will deepen its collaboration with the UN across various sectors to advance President John Mahama’s development agenda, particularly the strategic goal of “resetting Ghana” and achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He concluded by congratulating H.E. Zia Choudhurry, noting that his “track record and passion for development inspires hope” as he takes up this critical role in Ghana.
This development marks a strengthening of Ghana’s role on the global stage, reaffirming its commitment to peace, diplomacy, and sustainable development in a rapidly evolving world.
