The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ghana, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), held a bilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Mr. Iwaya Takeshi, on the sidelines of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama, Japan, on Friday, 22nd August 2025.

The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations between Ghana and Japan, particularly in the context of the TICAD Summit and its relevance to both nations. Key areas of cooperation highlighted included major infrastructural initiatives such as the Volivo Bridge Project and the construction of Kumasi Inner City Roads.

The meeting also touched on several landmark anniversaries: the 100th anniversary of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi’s arrival in Ghana, the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ghana and Japan, the 60th anniversary of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV), and the upcoming 80th anniversary of the United Nations. In relation to the latter, both Ministers emphasized the urgent need for reform of the United Nations Security Council.

The two Ministers reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening collaboration and advancing mutual interests across all spheres of their countries’ partnership.
