In a major push to improve public healthcare in Accra’s bustling Central Business District, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced a groundbreaking initiative to completely redevelop the aging Makola Government Clinic into a state-of-the-art four-storey medical facility.

Speaking during a city-wide working tour on Tuesday, the Mayor described the current state of the clinic as unacceptable, promising a complete overhaul to meet the urgent healthcare needs of traders and market women in the area.

> “I have observed that the facility is not in a good state,” the Mayor said, adding, “Government is committed to transforming it into a modern, four-storey building equipped to deliver quality healthcare.”

This ambitious project is part of a broader government effort to revamp key public health infrastructure across the metropolis, aiming to match the city’s rapid growth with reliable, accessible services.

The revamped clinic is expected to drastically cut down the travel time for thousands of traders and residents who currently trek long distances for basic medical care. Once completed, the new facility will serve as a vital lifeline for the vibrant and densely populated Makola area—one of Accra’s economic powerhouses.

City officials say work on the project is slated to begin soon, marking a new chapter in healthcare delivery for the capital’s hardworking market community.
