A member of Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team, Jennifer Oppong, has called on former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to withdraw from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential race, citing concerns over his legacy and the party’s internal cohesion.
In a widely shared Facebook post, Oppong argued that Bawumia has “outlived his usefulness” in Ghana’s political space and should consider retiring gracefully as a respected statesman. She praised his earlier influence—particularly his renowned 71-point critique of the Mahama administration—which, at the time, established him as a formidable intellectual force and broadened the NPP’s appeal, especially in regions traditionally loyal to the opposition.

However, she painted a bleak picture of Bawumia’s subsequent role in governance, claiming he lacked true authority as chair of the Economic Management Team.

She cited economic mismanagement, rising inflation, unsustainable debt, and controversial projects like the National Cathedral as signs of the administration’s failures. She also criticized the party’s internal politics, describing growing discontent, suppression of dissent, and manipulation of primary processes.

Oppong further noted Bawumia’s shift from a data-driven technocrat to what she called a “dancing campaign figure” lacking consistency, accusing him of abandoning the intellectual rigor that once earned him credibility.

Despite securing the party’s flagbearership, Oppong questioned the motivation behind his candidacy, claiming it appeared driven more by loyalty networks and political trade-offs than genuine vision.
“For the sake of your legacy, the unity of the NPP, and the future of Ghanaian politics—withdraw from the race,” she wrote. “Assume the role of a statesman… Do not open yourself further to political ridicule.”
As of now, Dr. Bawumia has not issued any response.
