Workers Union of Ghana Water Limited in the early hours of Wednesday, held a press conference amidst demonstration and registered their pleasure against what they described as unnecessary demolition of boys quarters and fence walls of the bangalows of their two Directors situated at Danyame, a suburb of Kumasi by some private developers on Friday, 6th December, 2024.
They have made claims that lands on which the properties are situated belongs to Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and that the vandalism breaches protocol and shows a blatant disrespect for their directors, managers and entire staff of GWCL in Ashanti region.
The Workers Union has asserted that it has not received any communication from their head office to cede the lands on which the bangalows are situated to any private developer.
However, investigations by this medium foils the above-mentioned defense.
Per our checks, the said area forms part of 400 acres of state-owned land that has been reassigned to private developers as part of urban redevelopment scheme.
Prior to the demolition, occupants comprising Senior government workers from various ministries were served notices to relocate into newly built houses after the area was swapped to developers.
A lot of houses have been pulled down and very expensive apartments constructed.
Among the agencies that were occupying the area, it has emerged that only workers of GWCL are protesting their eviction.
Information is ripe that, three newly built bangalows with keys and allocations situated behind the Ashanti regional office of Electoral Commission has been given to GWCL to replace the demolished ones.
It has been whispered into the ears of www.leakyghana.com that oficials of GWCL rejected keys to the newly built bangalows.
This medium has also gathered that private developers working on the 400 acre land have finished over 40 houses and handed over keys to the appropriate institutions who were affected by the project yesterday.
According to our sources, the contractor has agreed to give GWCL 5 new houses, and just yesterday, the contractor gave them keys of three of them, which have been completed.
GWCL according to our source has no lease covering lands over which they are claiming ownership.
During the press conference, some of the workers however claimed that GWCL has allocation and documents that suggest they own the land.
