The campaign team of Dr. Bryan Acheampong, a leading contender in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 flagbearer race, has pushed back strongly against claims that the Abetifi MP was the cause of the party’s crushing defeat in the 2024 general elections.

At a media briefing in Kumasi on Thursday, campaign spokesperson Mr. Eric Amoako Twum accused critics of waging a calculated smear campaign to undermine Dr. Acheampong’s growing popularity within the party.

He described as “baseless and politically motivated” allegations that Dr. Acheampong’s controversial 2023 remark that the NPP “will never hand over power to the NDC” was a key factor in the party’s electoral collapse.

“The comment was never about subverting democracy,” Mr. Twum explained. “It was an expression of confidence, a rallying call meant to energize party supporters to work harder for victory. Unfortunately, it was deliberately twisted by opponents to score cheap political points.”

Mr. Twum highlighted Dr. Bryan’s extensive contributions to the 2024 campaign, saying he personally resourced parliamentary candidates in 33 constituencies across the Eastern Region, demonstrating genuine commitment to the NPP’s success.

“Dr. Bryan Acheampong backed his words with action. It is, therefore, unfair to scapegoat him for the party’s loss,” he insisted.

The spokesperson questioned why blame for the defeat is being redirected at Dr. Acheampong instead of the party’s top leadership, including its former flagbearer.

“Who should be held responsible; the one who motivated the base or the one who led the national campaign?” he asked pointedly.

Mr. Twum also dismissed suggestions that Dr. Acheampong’s ongoing campaign for the 2028 flagbearer slot is divisive or anti-party.

“Our campaign is clean, issue-based, and focused on unity. We have not attacked or disrespected any aspirant,” he said.

He further used the occasion to thank the people of the Ashanti Region for their enthusiastic support during Dr. Acheampong’s recent regional tour, describing the visit as evidence of “strong grassroots momentum.”

Mr. Twum concluded that the campaign remains confident in its chances:

“If the NPP presidential primary were held today, Dr. Bryan Acheampong would win hands down.”
