The Energy Commission has reaffirmed that compliance with electrical standards in Ghana is mandatory, not optional, as it steps up enforcement of regulations governing the cable market.

Acting Executive Secretary Ms. Adwoa Serwaa Bondzie made this known at the launch of a Low Smoke Anti-Counterfeit Cable by Nexans Kabelmetal Ghana Ltd, stressing that strict adherence to standards is critical to safeguarding lives and property.

“When standards work, systems work. And when systems work, lives are protected,” she stated, highlighting the life-saving importance of regulatory compliance.

She explained that under the Electrical Wiring Cables and Accessories Regulations, 2023 (L.I. 2478), the Commission has strengthened oversight of the manufacture, importation, distribution, sale and use of electrical wiring cables and accessories.

The regulations are designed to ensure product traceability, enforce approved standards and hold companies accountable for the quality of materials they introduce onto the market.
According to Ms. Bondzie, the measures are necessary to prevent substandard electrical materials from compromising installations and posing risks to consumers.
She further noted that since the introduction of the Electrical Wiring Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 2008), the Commission has intensified inspections and deployed digital tools to enhance monitoring and professionalism within the sector.
The Installation Completion Certificate Application Platform (ICCAPP), she said, has significantly improved transparency and accountability in inspection and certification processes.
The Commission has also strengthened collaboration with the Ghana Standards Authority and port authorities to block the influx of inferior electrical materials into the country.
Reiterating the Commission’s position, Ms. Bondzie emphasised that ensuring safe electrical installations is essential to protecting lives, preserving property and maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s electrical market.
