This week, Accra Girls Senior High School took a bold step forward as it commissioned a self-help staff accommodation project.

The initiative forms part of a broader vision to provide decent housing for teachers—many of whom play an essential role in shaping the lives of the young girls on campus.

With more than 80 percent of students in boarding, staff housing is seen as crucial to ensuring teachers are close by to supervise, support, and guide their learners.

The event was graced by the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, who commended the initiative and reiterated government’s determination to improve access and quality in education.

He assured the gathering that the double-track system, long a challenge for schools, will soon be phased out, announcing that ¢1 billion has been earmarked in the 2026 budget to bring it to an end.

Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof. Smile Dzisi, also used the occasion to emphasise the importance of girl-child education. She called for sustained efforts to ensure girls are not only enrolled in school but are given the support to thrive and excel.

For the Headmistress, Mrs. Gifty Andoh, the new bungalows represent much more than buildings—they symbolise innovation, sacrifice, and the strength of community effort. Under her tactful leadership, the Board of Governors, Management, Project Committee, Staff, Alumni and Students rallied together to make the project a reality. She pledged to continue leading with vision, creativity, and motherly care. Accra Girls SHS has set the pace with this achievement, showing what is possible even with limited resources. The Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Hajia Katumi, and the Chair of the Board of Governors of Accra Girls SHS were there to offer their blessings and support.

The Public Relations Unit of GES has launched this spotlight series called 𝗚𝗘𝗦 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 to showcase schools, headteachers, teachers, students, parents, NGOs and CSOs driving meaningful change in both basic and senior high schools across the country. The goal is to commend and spotlight these individuals and institutions supporting government to improve the quality of education—and to inspire others to emulate their example.
