Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Hon. Sam George, has reiterated his commitment to addressing public concerns over pay-TV pricing and service delivery, assuring Ghanaians that regulatory actions will commence on August 7 against satellite television provider, DStv.

In a statement shared on Facebook, the Minister welcomed calls from the NPP Minority on Parliament’s Communications Select Committee for engagement, affirming his respect for parliamentary oversight and the Committee’s role in governance.

“I can assure the Committee as a whole that the Ministry would provide a full update when we complete our regulatory actions on 7th August,” he said.

Hon. George detailed a series of engagements with DStv’s Ghanaian and headquarters management, revealing that he first met with the local team on June 27 before meeting with the multinational’s top executives on July 4—on a national holiday.

During the discussions, he tabled Ghana’s request for a 30% reduction in DStv subscription fees and raised concerns over piracy issues on the platform that harm local content creators and broadcasters.

“DStv responded with a 9-page letter on 21st July. If the 1-page letter annoyed you, imagine what was in the 9-pager,” the Minister remarked pointedly, suggesting frustration with the provider’s response and posture.
He characterized the Ministry’s planned regulatory action as a “last resort” necessitated by what he described as a “recalcitrant monopoly” that has become “tone deaf to the cries of their customers.”
According to Hon. George, the regulator will initiate measures consistent with the terms of DStv’s license and the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).
He emphasized that all actions would be lawful and focused on protecting the interests of Ghanaian consumers under the government’s RESET Agenda.
“I have always approached this matter with one goal, a fair price for the Ghanaian people,” he concluded. “I remain accountable to the people of Ghana in my service as Minister. For God and Country.”
The announcement has sparked widespread interest across the country as citizens await the August 7 deadline for concrete regulatory steps.
