Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy Committee and MP for Ofoase/Ayirebi, has strongly criticized the government over its recent announcement on cocoa producer prices. He believes the new pricing is a scam against Ghana’s hardworking cocoa farmers.
The government recently announced a major increase in the producer price of cocoa for the 2025/2026 season. The price was raised from $3,100 to $5,040 per tonne, a 62.58% increase in dollar terms.

This price was approved by the Producer Price Review Committee (PPRC), chaired by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and will take effect from August 7.

However, Oppong Nkrumah says the increase looks good on paper but does not benefit the cocoa farmer in real terms. He explained that the actual increase in Ghana Cedi is only GHS128 per bag — from GHS3,100 to GHS3,228.

“The cocoa farmer doesn’t care about the dollar figures or FOB price. What matters is the money they get for each bag of cocoa,” he said during an interview on Eyewitness News.

Oppong Nkrumah reminded Ghanaians that while in opposition, the ruling government promised to pay GHS6,000 per tonne to cocoa farmers.
According to him, this promise has been broken, and the new price shows the government is not serious about helping farmers.
He accused the government of using confusing figures to deceive the public and called the whole pricing announcement “hogwash.”
In his words, “The government has scammed cocoa farmers. What they promised in opposition is completely different from what they are doing now.”
Oppong Nkrumah’s comments have sparked fresh debate on whether cocoa farmers are truly benefiting from government policies.
